Cambridge

Brains and beauty – Cambridge has them both in spades. As soon as you set foot in the city, you’ll notice the palpable sense of history and erudition. Like Oxford, the city is dominated by illustrious colleges. But what really distinguishes it from its scholarly rival are the gorgeous meadows that straddle the River Cam – ‘the Backs.’

Punting down the river is the quintessentially Cambridge thing to do. But if you’re more of a landlubber then there’s all manner of sites to see, from the Fitzwilliam Museum – which holds the city’s finest art collection – to the famous Eagle pub, where Crick and Watson went to drink after working out the structure of DNA. And that’s not to mention all the seasonal events, like the hugely popular Cambridge Folk Festival.
